ScientificName: Order Dermaptera, many families, many species.
Description: ½ inch – 1-inch long, slender, brown bodies with non-poisonous pinchers at the end of the abdomen.
Habitat/Food: Earwigs live under debris, wherever they can find shelter, and they also invade homes in warm weather. They eat mostly decaying organic matter and some plant foliage.
Life Cycle: Adults lay eggs from winter to spring and undergo simple metamorphosis.
Organic Control: Citrus products will kill earwigs on contact.
Interesting Fact: Female earwigs look after their eggs and will protect them from harm using their pinchers. Scientists have noticed that if they disturb an earwig's eggs, she will collect them together again. Hardly any other insects protect their young.
