Grasshopper
ScientificName: Order Orthoptera, familyAcrididae, many species
Description: Brown, black, yellow, or green bodies with large hind legs and wings.
Habitat/Food: Grasshoppers are found in the grass, shrubbery, trees, and crops. They feed on the leaves and stems of almost all plants and can be devastating in large numbers.
Life Cycle: Eggs overwinter in the ground and hatch in spring. Nymphs look like smaller versions of the adults and develop in 40-60 days. They have one generation per year.
Organic Control: Grasshoppers need bare soil to lays their eggs so mulch everywhere. Some plant oil based products are also an effective control for adults.
Interesting Fact: A Grasshopper can leap 20 times the length of its own body. If you or I could do that, we would be able to jump almost 40 yards. The largest species of grasshoppers is over 4 inches long.
