ScientificName: Order Homoptera, family Cicadellidae, many species
Description: Brown, blue, or green bodies and a triangular head with the wings being a large portion of the insect.
Habitat/Food: Leafhoppers can be found in both vegetable and ornamental gardens and feed on the juices of plants in those areas.
Life Cycle: Eggs are deposited in leaf tissues. Once they hatch, the nymphs feed on the underside of leaves and become adults within 1-4 weeks. The adults overwinter in plant debris and there are two or more generations a year.
Organic Control: Citrus oil and most other plant oil based products will take care of any infestations.
Interesting Fact: Cold and wet weather conditions in spring and fall are damaging to leafhopper populations, as are wet winters.
