Pillbug Pillbug

ScientificName: Armadillidium vulgare and Porcellio laevis
Description: Up to 5/8-inche long, gray bodies and look like they have armor plating. They have lots of legs and pillbugs, also called roly-poly bugs, will roll up into a ball when threatened.
Habitat/Food: They live in moist areas under debris and feed on decaying organic matter and sometime seedlings when there are large numbers of them.
Life Cycle: Females carry eggs until they become nymphs. Their population increases with the amount of spring rain.
Organic Control: Sowbugs and pillbugs do not usually do damage unless in large numbers, but hot pepper wax, citrus oils, and other plant oil based products work well to stop a major infestation.
Interesting Fact: It takes almost a year for a nymph to become an adult and they can live for over eight years.
