ScientificName: Hyphantria cunea
Description: 1-inch, hairy, white or brown larvae that turn into ½-inch, white moths.
Habitat/Food: Webworms feed of the foliage of more than 100 different species of deciduous trees. They build webs where they are eating and can defoliate entire trees.
Life Cycle: Eggs are laid on the underside of leaves and they immediately start feeding after hatching. Once the larvae are full-grown they find a safe place to pupate. Up to four generations per year.
Organic Control: Bacillus thuringiensis (BT) should be sprayed at dusk when the webworms are visible.
Interesting Fact: Over 120 deciduous species are host to the fall webworm.
